Hypersomnia - Sleep Disorder

Hypersomnia is the name for a group of sleep disorders characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness. It is a condition in which a person has trouble staying awake during the day. People who have Hypersomnia fall asleep at any time; at work and even while driving.

Primary Hypersomnia, like Narcolepsy, can be neurological or genetic. Hypersomnia is separate sleep disorder from the better-known conditions such as sleep apnea or Narcolepsy.

Patients suffering from primary Hypersomnia regularly sleep more than 70 hours per week and have difficulties awakening.

Sleep apnea is the most frequent cause of secondary Hypersomnia. Only a Polysomnography (sleep study) and the analysis of the study results can provide and accurate diagnosis for your sleep disorder.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypersomnia include:

  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Lack of focus
  • Mood disorders
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Autoimmune diseases (lupus and rheumatoid arthritis)
